Golden Globes

Michelle Yeoh in Armani Prive

I confess….I did not personally watch the Golden Globes, because as the parent to a singularly stubborn 9yo son, control over the T.V. is very rarely mine. However, being more a fan of the fashion than the films, I of course devoured coverage of the event from the Red Carpet perspective, particularly that of WWD, my longtime window to the world of fashion.

I noticed a few trends. There were silhouettes that were very straight, such as Michelle Yeoh (in Armani Prive), Anna Taylor-Joy (in Dior), and Letitia Flores (in Prada). On the other hand, there were those who embraced a more voluminous silhouette, such as Julia Garner (in Gucci), Jenna Ortega (also Gucci), and Lily James (in Versace).

Julia Garner/ Gucci: I absolutely LOVE this look! Maybe I’m biased because pink is my favorite color, this cotton-candy confection blossoms like flower petals at the skirt, pleating adding the necessary volume, with the touch of very delicate sparkle on the spaghetti-straps and the “bones” within the corset-like top. This is a very classic look, like we may have seen on Grace Kelly in days of yore.

Jenna Ortega / Gucci: also heavily pleated, even more so, with an even more voluminous skirt, and a bralette-style top as opposed to the other more corset-like top. This gown is also differentiated by it’s cut-outs at the side, and the very neutral color palette.

Michelle Yeoh / Armani Prive: a classy look for a classy lady. Peplum breaks up the otherwise arrow-straight silhouette, complimenting her slender frame. The color is ethereal, the consciously crafted sequins against the black backdrop giving the effect that Yeoh is wearing a sky full of stars.

Anna Taylor Joy / Dior: another very straight, narrow silhouette featuring a stand-alone bralette top (like a bikini, only more classy) and a very narrow skirt, both in canary yellow. While it is hard to tell from the photos, the fabric gives the appearance of being very stiff, which makes me wonder how she was able to walk throughout the night! Be it as it may, the canary yellow color compliments her long blond hair.

Letitia Flores / Prada: honestly, I’m still not sure how I feel about this one. Again a very narrow, straight silhouette in what appears to be very stiff fabric, despite the slit at the thigh. The color contrast is interesting - white like a header and footer at the top and bottom of the gown, with a combination of various shades of orange/brown in-between. The colors are beautiful and are definitely complimentary, however.

Lily James / Versace: dramatic. Cherry-red color, skit is voluminous to the max, a very classic look with the addition of modern touches such as a bralette top (connect to the skirt via straps, also creating a cut-out type of look). This is a very extreme, show-stopping look.

Donald Glover / Saint Laurent: the very roomy, off-white tunic with matching pants, reminded me immediately of far-off lands such as Africa, the Middle East, India perhaps? Hot climates where white linens are worn frequently in loose-fitting shapes…but then the look is turned upside down with the addition of a very formal-looking blazer. So perhaps this is a matter of East-meets-West? It’s a very interesting concept and one that definitely makes you think, which I surely appreciate. And I sincerely hope that I did not cause offense with any of these comments.

So, that’s about it….I hope you enjoyed my breakdown of the “best-dressed” stars, at least as named by WWD….I’d love to your hear your comments, so please use the messaging feature here or hit me up @kristinas_korner on Instagram. Peach!
